Einstein is revered for this ability to problem solve. At the core of Einstein’s problem solving approach was his ability to generate and integrate multiple perspectives. Perspective taking can be a wonderful way for you to be more innovative and problem solve in a new way as you can see in the article Thinking Like Einstein.
“Einstein used thought experiments to set himself up to consider multiple perspectives prior to attempting to resolve a problem.”
Rebar Neimi, Thinking Like Einstein
Taking and integrating perspectives is a very powerful capability once mastered, however, many of us don’t value it because we don’t think we need it. We believe that we already integrate perspectives as a part of our understanding of others including customers or co-workers.
However, in most cases we are only fooling ourselves.
It is difficult to separate yourself from the emotion, the interactions and years of thinking, social conditioning and programming that you have received. Perspective taking, when done properly, can eliminate your own biases and opinions and allow you to really see the world from another person’s point of view. Perspective taking is a skill that improves if developed over time; the best way to reap the benefits of this powerful approach is to use a structured and repeatable approach. Once you have mastered how to truly walk a mile in someone’s shoes, you will be able to more effectively make better decisions, which in turn, will lead to better outcomes.
